Beginner Class Observation
Last night I took a 2 hour course at REI on basic bicycle maintenance. REI describes this course as follows.
The Basic Bicycle Maintenance Class is an informative class to learn how to lube a chain, fix a flat tire in record time, or do minor adjustments to your bicycle.
I learned quite a bit and feel more comfortable handling or at least diagnosing problems.
My observation of this class and EVERY other class aimed at beginners is that there is always one person taking the class that doesn’t belong there. Last night was no exception.
Some jerk that knew a lot about bikes felt the need to demonstrate to the class how smart he was with his questions. For about 20 minutes he took the instructor down a path of obscure questions regarding bicycle repair issues that would never happen to most riders. The kind of repair you would take to a professional. This guy must have been motivated to look like the alpha male in front of his wife/girlfriend. The sad part is his wife couldn’t see that this guy was clearly gay and had yet to come out of the closet.
