Coffee and War

In the early 1990s, I had some great coffee from Burundi. Then war came to that country and the coffee went away for 10 years. After 10 years the coffee quality still isn’t back to where it once was. War is not good for coffee.

Yesterday I walked past a newspaper stand and saw that Ethiopia had attacked Somalia. When it comes to coffee Ethiopia is one of the most important countries, so I took notice.

Although it looks like this war won’t spread to the coffee fields, I’m not risking it. I just ordered 7 pounds of green coffee beans from 2 distinct regions of Ethiopia. Green beans can keep for 2 years. It’s not much considering the Burundi story, but as a home roaster, it’s worth buying a little insurance.
