Border Hike No More

This morning I went down by the border to hike Otay Mountain (West Approach). This is hike M-10 Trip 1 in Afoot & Afield in San Diego. When this book finally comes out with an updated edition (April 2007), I don’t think this will be listed anymore.

Otay Mountain just happens to be near a prison, JV detention center and is crawling with a massive amount of border patrol agents. They now have NO STOPPING - Your Car Will Be Towed signs all around what would have been the trail head. I guess they don’t want you busting your American friend out of jail or helping your Mexican amigo travel norte.

The hike was already going to be 14 miles, so parking your car outside the signs would have added an extra 5 miles. No thanks. Hiking along a road of screaming 18-wheelers just to get to the hike is not my idea of fun.

It may be possible to hike the mountain from the East approach. Anyone know?
