Seeing the Top Metro Areas of America

After my Seattle post, I started to think about how many of the top metro areas I still have yet to see. Below is a list of the top 20 metro areas as measured by RadioAndRecords and when I last visited that area. Note that I don’t consider driving through a metro or being in the airport a true visit. A visit requires a full 24 hour stay. Those listed in bold are the metro areas that I have yet to visit.

1-New York (October 2005)
2-Los Angeles (March 2007)
3-Chicago
4-San Francisco (July 2006)
5-Dallas
6-Houston
7-Philadelphia
8-Washington DC (June 2000)
9-Atlanta (March 1989)
10-Detroit
11-Boston (October 2005)
12-Miami (December 1995)
13-Puerto Rico
14-Seattle
15-Phoenix (March 2003)
16-Minneapolis
17-San Diego (today)
18-Nassau-Suffolk
19-Tampa Bay (October 2006)
20-St. Louis

That’s a 50% score. Not bad. Other than Seattle and Chicago are any of the metros I haven’t visited worth seeing?

Interesting list. Not that I’d have much reason to visit or have any desire to live in the middle of the country, I’ve heard great things about the Twin Cities area. Never know, I guess. Before moving here, I never gave Seattle even a second thought.

St. Louis and Columbus are remarkably similar (I think so, anyway).
Dallas was fun … last time I went, ten years ago =] Crazy drivers, but that’s everywhere now.

I can whole heartedly recommend Chicago. GREAT place. Lots of nice lake front park land for walking, jogging, biking, etc.

Philadelphia is great for the history. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, cool stuff walking along the same streets our country’s forefathers (and mothers) tromped along… doesn’t get any cooler than that!

I’ve not seen Minneapolis, but I’ve heard great things– lots of art, and even in winter a very liveable city what with the habitrails and tunnels they have connecting most every building in downtown…

Of the ones you haven’t been to, and I have, here are my comments:

I think you should definitely go to these cities …

- Dallas (I lived there for 4 years, my second favorite large metro after SD).
- Chicago (NOT in the winter)
- Philly (NOT in the winter)
- Seattle
- St Louis (lots of crime, but some good stuff)

Personally, I don’t see any reason to ever visit Detroit and Houston. Both are armpits in my opinion. Also, I’d avoid Minneapolis - don’t see a reason to visit a ‘cold’ state unless it has some other redeeming quality (like Chicago and Philly). If the best thing it has to offer is the Mall of Americas and Prince, I’d pass.

Finally, I’d think that Puerto Rico would be great to visit. I’ve never been there, but know some people who have and loved it (probably a good winter destination).
