For Whom the Bellevue Tolls

Let me tell you about my first 3 days as a new resident of Bellevue, Washington.

First things first, I would be helpless if I hadn’t bought a GPS. Not only does it provide street directions, it tells me where stores and restaurants are located. Some of the data is bad. On the first day I discovered that two Peets Coffee and Tea locations near my place no longer exist (darn!).

Below is a photo of the GPS in action on what I hope was the very last time I ever have to drive through the urban wasteland known as Los Angeles.

Moving into a new place immediately requires that one performs the suburban triple jump: Costco, Trader Joes and Target. This is followed by an we forgot to get… trip back to Target.

The movers still haven’t showed up with our stuff. So we are laying on the floor like animals. It’s kind of hard for a 6 ft 3 inch 210 pound man to blog on the floor. I really don’t know how cavemen got by without comfortable chairs. The last estimate is that the movers will show up on Monday. Had we known it would be such a delay, I could have stayed a few more days in Portland or even hit a few National Parks on the way up.

I’m not sure I like Bellevue yet. I’m starting to feel like I’ve moved into the West Coast version of Tysons Corner, Virginia. Lots of traffic, 3 minute traffic lights and every parking lot is packed. I need to learn some back roads or I’ll never leave the house.

We also learned that the place known as Taco Time is the most vile disgusting Mexican food ever made. Makes Taco Bell seem like gourmet food. I think Mexico should move to have this place closed and bulldozed over at the next United Nations meeting.

Although I rarely listen to regular (terrestrial) radio since I have XM, I did stumble upon a gem of a station. If you like high energy dance music, then tune into 89.5 FM the next time you are in Seattle. It’s every bit as good as XM’s BPM 81 and it’s run by high school students.

C-89.5 Worldwide has been playing Seattles Hottest Music for over 35 years. The station is owned by the Seattle Public Schools and is operated by students of Nathan Hale High School as part of a radio broadcasting course. Production, programming, music selection, copy, and on-air hosting is done by the student staff.

My high school had programs to teach you how to milk cows and grow corn. These kids get to spin dance records on a powerful FM signal. Too cool.
