Urban Hiking

I’ve been on the Seattle side of the bridge for about 10 days now and I’ve already gone on three urban hikes in excess of two hours. I’ve also done numerous hikes of 20-30 minutes. Walking around Queen Anne, Pike Market and Pioneer Square sure beats walking around the Volvo dealership in Bellevue.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

I decided to finally read the classic book on friendship.

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie is a book I wish I had read in college. It is nice collection of tips on dealing with people that many of us tend to pick up over the years.

No Coffee For Old MAS

Home roasting coffee in my new apartment will not be an option. For the next year, I will be forced to buy beans from commercial roasters. Considering I live in Seattle, this isn’t really bad news. But I do love home coffee roasting. I will miss creating my own espresso blends.

Biking Around Lopez Island

Yesterday I went up to Lopez Island, which is part of the San Juan Islands. These islands are off the coast of Washington and butt right up against Canada. The weather was perfect and the island was peaceful and not crowded.

Here is a late evening photo taken from the roof of my Seattle apartment building. It’s a better view than that of my former neighbors back in Bellevue.

Nature Girl

A while back I saw Carl Hiaasen on 60 Minutes. He seemed like an interesting guy and I made a note to someday read one of his books.  I finally did.

Nature Girl by Carl Hiaasen is a fun story that takes place in the South Florida Everglades. I really don’t read enough fiction [...]

An Unreasonable Man

While at the library I was thumbing through the documentaries and came across one on Ralph Nader. I knew a little bit about the man, but not too much. Considering my interests are more financial and less political these days, I didn’t have high expectations. I was wrong.

An Unreasonable Man [...]

Aster Coffee Lounge in Ballard

Sunday the Seattle Coffee Club went to Aster Coffee Lounge in the Ballard area of Seattle. When I walked in I was pleasantly surprised to see Intelligentsia Coffee. This means the Black Kat espresso blend. Yummy.
I also had an outstanding coffee from their Clover. Now Ballard has three great coffee places:

Caffe [...]
