No Coffee For Old MAS

Home roasting coffee in my new apartment will not be an option. For the next year, I will be forced to buy beans from commercial roasters. Considering I live in Seattle, this isn’t really bad news. But I do love home coffee roasting. I will miss creating my own espresso blends.

Green Coffee Beans

I have three main coffee roasters.

  1. Westbend Poppery - The old popcorn popper is a tank. It also produces a lot of smoke.
  2. I-Roast 2 - I held out hope for this one. Roasting by the window still set off multiple smoke detectors yesterday and it took an hour to air out the apartment.
  3. Behmor 1600 - Keeps throwing errors and ruining roasts. I’m done with this roaster.

After my smoke detector escapades yesterday I walked around my building looking for an outdoor outlet. No luck. The only way I’m going to have home roasted coffee is if one of my fellow Seattle neighbors invites me over and lets me use a porch or balcony. You will be compensated with fresh roasted coffee. :)

  • Any chance you could find an outlet on the roof of your new building? Judging by your photo below that’d be a beautiful place from which to roast!

  • Funny you should ask. After failing to find an outlet on the ground level, I went up on the roof and searched all over. That would be the most perfect place to roast. Unfortunately there are no outlets up there.

  • We might be able to work out an agreement. Especially as I’ll be back on coffee sometime soon, this could work out splendidly.

That said, my father mentioned putting plastic wrap around your smoke detector to keep it from going off. A recommendation from a retired fire chief…go figure. Just be sure to take the plastic off after roasting.

  • Excellent!

  • As long as the smoke production is not a problem, you’re welcome to come down to Pioneer Square on the weekends and plug in the roaster… serious!

  • Sweet!
