Measuring My Writing Level

Today I found a tool which calculates your writing level using a formula called the Gunning-Fog Index.  You enter a URL and it comes back with a score.  Here is a sample of how the Gunning-Fog Index looks.

  • 6: TV Guide
  • 8: Readers Digest
  • 10: Time, Newsweek
  • 11: Wall Street Journal

I randomly tested samples of my writing from CriticalMAS, INeedCoffee and Digital Colony and got the following scores.

5.84: Tales From the Glitter Gym - Locker Room Edition

6.05: That Time I Got In a Car Chase With Hulk Hogan

7.98: Coffee on the Road - Los Cabos, Mexico

8.02: Buying Individual Stocks Doesn’t Work for Me

8.45: Coffee Blending For the Home Roaster

8.68: The Presidential Motorcade

8.90: SQL Injection - Case Study

9.28: Coffee and Dieting

Part of me would like to see my writing level improve over time.  However I understand writing for the web often means writing for people where English is a second or third language.

Earlier this month I posted a report on the Number of Countries Viewing My Web Sites.  It is clear that one can no longer assume the typical Internet user is a college educated American.  Those days are over.
