Gone Are The Days When the Sun Used to Set
I did a night time stroll around Queen Anne tonight and tried to get some decent photos. The “Night Snapshot” mode on the Canon SD800 Elph actually was throwing out a flash. Fail. Then I went to manual mode and used ledges to mimic a real tripod. The pictures got a little better. I think I need a real tripod or a better camera or both.

Try shutter priority mode with either a tripod, steady hand, or camera sitting on a steady ledge. Experiment with a 1, 2, 3, 4, etc second exposure. If you have no shutter priority mode then try scene mode which may work but only with some pre-determined shutter time based on whatever algorithm the Canon has built in.
If you want a great camera to fool around with for very little money, I’d recommend finding a used Canon Powershot G1. This was the first Canon prosumer digital and it went for around $1000 when it was introduced. I’ve seen working models advertised on Ebay for under $50 and even by today’s standards, it’s still a phenomenal camera for the price.

Ed,
I went back out tonight and took some of your tips. The Space Needle shot was better, but still off. However the Betty Bowden view shot came out much better.
