Stir Fry Reloaded

I used to love Asian restaurants.  These days, however,  I am almost disappointed in the lack of vegetable variety and how little protein they put in each dish.  You end up eating lots of rice and noodles to get your moneys worth.

Over a year ago, I decided I had enough of over paying for 4 pieces of shrimp over 2 veggies. Now I do things my way.  Lots of veggies, lots of shrimp and just a few noodles.  Look at the photo below.

How many veggies are in this stir fry?

  1. garlic
  2. onion
  3. habanero
  4. carrot
  5. celery
  6. broccoli
  7. zucchini *
  8. rhubarb *
  9. yellow bell pepper
  10. Swiss chard

* Adding small amounts of zucchini and rhubarb was just test.  Neither worked well in the dish.

You’ll also notice there is no shortage of shrimp and I don’t use those little baby shrimps either.  Using 8 or more veggies in a single dish is normal for me.  I never use recipes.  People ask me what my favorite restaurants are in Seattle.  The answer is my kitchen.

  • I totally agree with your last line there. I was at a cooking class with my friends last night, and when mentioned I worked in the International District, the instructor asked what my favorite Chinese restaurant is, I answered, “my kitchen.” She agreed, noting that Chinese restaurants use too much (unhealthy) oil and sauce. With my own stir fry, I can really emphasize the meat and vegetables and use moderate amounts of healthy oil (I’m really loving the coconut oil now).

  • yeah, i know what you mean about too little protein sources…i use rice bran oil to fry up my veggie morsels!!

  • what kind of oil do you use?

  • Right now Extra Virgin Olive Oil. However, I am looking into Coconut Oil. I threw out my Canola and Corn oils. Too much Omega-6s, which promote obesity and other health problems.
