Below is a reprint from something I wrote in July 1998.

It’s July 1998 and I’m still living in Florida and Lura is already in DC. Full of White House connections Lura scores us passes to view the fireworks display on the White House lawn. Below is a collection of photos from the July 4th weekend.

The gentleman in the last two photos is President Clinton, who came out to shake Lura’s hand. I didn’t shake Clinton’s hand only because I already did on the 1992 campaign. So many people wanted to meet him, that I stood back and took pictures. Lura’s persistence paid off and she ended up shaking the President’s hand.

The night ended with a 2 hour journey trying to use the Metro to leave DC. However, there are no photos of that horrible scene.

Little did I know then that I’d end up meeting President Clinton two summers later.

We foresaw a similar metro journey last year but opted for chinese food instead, then took a cab back to the hotel much easier. That throng of bodies looked scary.
